First, it needs to be said — carrying all of that at once is incredibly heavy. Losing your dad, your cats, your dogs, and a relationship you cherished... that's so much grief layered on top of depression. It makes complete sense that happy memories bring tears right now. Crying when you Show Full Answer

First, it needs to be said — carrying all of that at once is incredibly heavy. Losing your dad, your cats, your dogs, and a relationship you cherished... that's so much grief layered on top of depression. It makes complete sense that happy memories bring tears right now. That's not weakness, that's love.

Crying when you think of happy times doesn't mean you're broken. It means those moments and those beings truly mattered to you. When depression feels this heavy, finding happiness can start very small. Here are some gentle ideas that others with depression have found helpful:

- Looking at old photos of your pets and letting yourself feel the love, not just the loss
- Watching a comforting show or movie you've seen before
- Stepping outside, even briefly, for fresh air
- Writing down one tiny thing each day that felt okay, even neutral

Small moments of gratitude, even imperfect ones, can slowly help lift the weight over time. Tomorrow will be a hard day. Be extra gentle with yourself. If you have a therapist, reaching out before or after could really help. You deserve support, especially on difficult anniversaries. 💙
