Members responded to the question about hurtful things people have said about their depression with deep frustration and solidarity, sharing dismissive comments like 'cheer up,' 'snap out of it,' 'stop feeling sorry for yourself,' and blaming a lack of faith. Several members pointed out that depression is a medical condition involving brain chemistry, not a choice, and that telling someone to just be happy is like telling someone with heart disease to go jogging. A recurring theme was the pain of being misunderstood by family members, with many cutting off relatives who refused to respect their struggles.

I've been told to stop thinking about whatever is making sad. What they don't get is idk why I'm sad. It hits me like a brick and I'm so thankful for everything I have. It's my brain and I can't control how my brain operates without taking medication.

That, "if I hadn't stopped believing in 'god' I wouldn't be having these issues," as well as "all your doctors, psychiatrists and counselors have been bullshitting me for years because they're in cahoots with Big Pharma to get rich."

That family member has since been blocked 🚫
