The most basic thing people don't understand is that you can't just "snap out of it." That it's your fault, and if you tried a little harder it would go away. That it's a character failing, or that it's really not serious.
I don't like when someone says "get over it "

I'll add more than one, since I've been fighting chronic depression for decades.
1. It doesn't have to be triggered by an event. Mine hit at puberty and is probably
genetic.
2. It affects literally everything in your life.
3. Even family and friends get tired of hearing about it or think that you're using it as
an excuse.
4. Bad times hit you harder than other people.
5. It affects your judgment and perception of events.
6. You aren't lazy, you're frozen in place.
7. Some people get better, some don't.
