If you guys don't mind, I'm preparing an informational speech for one of my classes. The topic I chose is "How to help someone with depression" and I'd like to get some input from y'all. The part of the speech I'm working on now (part of my slideshow presentation) is the "Do's and Do Not's" when speaking to someone with depression. I really want an accurate depiction of the things others say that help people when they're feeling low, and want a diverse pool (so that it's not just me putting… read more

I hate it when someone points out everyone who has it worse than me. Then I feel ashamed and selfish on top of being depressed. People don’t realize that depression is more than just feeling sad, and it’s not self pity.

I hate it when people say "quit feeling sorry for yourself", get over it, and youre not sick you are just being lazy. Makes me wanna throat punch them. Especially my parents who do not believe in anxiety and depression, no support whatsoever.

Good luck with your speech!

For myself, that pity look is the worst. You know the “ look”

I’d like others to ask “ How are you actually doing ?” And mean it.

I despise those backhanded statements ..... “ oh you’ve lost weight you must not be taking your medicine,my goodness you look terrible!”

Or the other “ you’ve gained so much weight , I see you’ve been taking all your meds , I always did like it when you were fat.”

Or when others see you in store and they hide from you afraid you’ll talk to them .

Just because I have
depression and I have bipolar does not Mean I have a contagious disease.

Listen and be honest. If you think they need a different perspective give it to them.

Do not call them lazy. Do nice things for them.. Encourage them to go out even if its just a walk around the block.
