What Types Of Coping Mechanisms Or Grounding Techniques Do You Find Helpful For Anxiety?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm looking to expand my repertoire of skills for personal use as well as to build my handy dandy toolbox for my clients who are in crisis. All and any will be warmly accepted.

One technique I have found really helpful is called bodyscan. What you do is close your eyes and focus all of your attention on your toes, take time to notice how they feel then slowly move up your body from there making sure to pay attention to every part of your body until you reach the very top of your head. Another similar technique is to once again close your eyes and take a slow deep breath in as you are doing that focus on how your body feels as you breath in and do the same on when you breath out. I have found both of these work great because it makes your brain focus on something other than what ever might be causing the anxiety. Sometimes you might not feel calmed after one go of it but you can just do another round.

I sing. I run a community singing group and I'm in a band, it's not about how good you are, it's amazing for health and wellbeing

I found the art of mindfulness really helpful. You can so it if you're having an anxiety attack while around a million people. Simply by focusing on your immediate surroundings in order to avoid letting your mind run away with you. I use it during tests to. It's rather simple yet complicated. But I recommend researching that. Good luck xxxx

Hi that's a great question. In the throws of anxiety all exercise went out the window save for hiking and sometimes walking. I crave the natural beauty of the coast, hills and mountains to calm me and ficus the mind. The added benefit is exercise. Personally I can highly recommend reflexology as a major shift for me and so much so I have weekly sessions. I also took up Thai Chi and find that I'm so relaxed after it, also helps having a great instructor. I recently did a one day mindfulness session and still feel the benefits, the words are very empowering, it's a new interest now for me. Also found using the app called Headspace, daily 10 minute guided meditation really good, key is to sustain these new therapies and incorporate them into a new way of living.
Lastly, finding breathing techniques that work for me to use with bouts of anxiety is fantastic.
Hope this helps.

One thing that sounds simple & minimal but really helps me.. is just to tell myself "Im safe" nothing in that exact moment can harm me more then me. So my immediate response is I am safe in that exact moment and then I identify why that is eg. I'm at home, I do have someone to call...I have food to eat.. water to drink....of course also breathing!!
