Members responded to the question about depression medication losing its effectiveness with many sharing that they have felt the same way, describing feelings of numbness, dizziness, brain fog, and general flatness. Several members offered helpful perspectives, including that antidepressants are meant to soften the lows rather than eliminate depression entirely, and that factors like poor sleep, dehydration, and rumination can reduce how well meds work. A recurring theme was the importance of staying in contact with a doctor or nurse practitioner when meds feel off, with some members sharing that DNA testing, medication switches, or added therapy helped them find more relief.

Some medications run their course as the brain becomes immune over use for extended periods of time. Certainly something to discuss with your Dr. And soon.

I wish I was back on my antidepressant Pristiq. I am on a lot of psych meds but they are mostly for my bipolar symptoms unfortunately. Maybe if stopping Amantadine does not help things and if ECT doesn't not help either maybe he can put me back on Pristiq. To be honest I loved being extremely manic and walking to the extreme which you can say that was my self harm activity because I would walk up until my legs and body hurts and lived on taking Tylenol around the clock. My psychiatrist was concerned so that is why he took off of the Pristiq

Remember, the meds are not designed to eliminate depression but moderate its impact. They serve as brakes on the lows but doesn't block them.

I have Ben very low with my meds but I recognize what is going on and compensate. Now if you keep dropping into a really dark place then I'd see what your practitioner says. It's also worth examining if you are doing things that complicate things for the meds. By this I mean disrupted sleep, slipping into rumination, even certain foods can combat the effectiveness. Nothing wrong with dropping a line to the doc or pa.
