Members opened up about their work histories in response to the question about work struggles, sharing a wide range of careers including nursing, mental health counseling, retail management, trucking, and hospital administration. Many described being workaholics who used constant work to cope with depression, anxiety, or emotional pain, with several eventually transitioning to disability due to physical illness, bipolar disorder, MS, or burnout. A recurring theme was a deep love for meaningful work alongside the hard acceptance that health challenges made continuing impossible, paired with gratitude for community and new ways of finding purpose.

Hey 23! My work in radio sales was strangely similar... Once I established trust and strong billing numbers, everyone left me alone. For five years I had absolute autonomy and when I moved to bigger markets no one f'ed with me cause I was the top biller usually. But. I digress...

Would anyone feel comfortable sharing their work experiences with depression?

You're definitely not alone in struggling with work while managing depression. Many people find it challenging to balance their mental health with workplace demands.

A MyDepressionTeam member shared: "Depression and work life is very hard for me to manage most days. Not many people know about my mental illness because I was told not to talk about it while I'm on the clock." They found it helpful when coworkers who knew about their struggles would say they were glad they came to work even when it was difficult.

Another member talked about returning to work after taking mental health leave, feeling anxious about explaining their situation. The community reminded them that they don't have to share details if they're not comfortable - simply saying they were dealing with health issues is enough.

Here are some things that might help:

* You're never required to disclose your depression to an employer
* If you do share, you can request accommodations like modified schedules for therapy appointments
* Any medical information shared for accommodations must be kept confidential
* Having a set work schedule can actually provide helpful structure during difficult times
* It's okay to lighten your load at home when work demands are high

What specific challenges are you facing at work? The community here understands how tough it can be.

Before that I worked with developmentally disabled youth who were troubled, violent both verbal and non verbal I did that for 5 years I used to work my 40 hours a week then I’d work 100 hours overtime both sleep and awake till I got hurt on the job which led me to my internship which turned into a full time job working with homeless veterans and their families if they had any. That job was a blessing and I loved every minute of it as well as my career path.
