For the past month and a half I've been having episodes where my legs feel very weak and shaky and I feel dizzy. I feel like I'm going to pass out or fall down if I don't sit immediately. There has even been times when I had to hold onto the walls to get to a soft and safe place to sit . When I get within a short distance to the bed or a chair I have to shove myself off the wall and I crumple onto the chair or bed as in I fall into a sitting place. I'm worried about this happening in front of… read more

Are you experiencing different types of panic attacks, or could something else be causing these episodes?

The physical symptoms you're describing—severe leg weakness, dizziness, feeling like you'll pass out, and needing to hold onto walls—sound quite different from typical panic attacks and warrant immediate medical attention. While anxiety can cause physical symptoms, the severity of what you're experiencing (literally crumpling into chairs, needing wall support) suggests this needs evaluation beyond your psychiatric care.

It's crucial to see your primary care doctor or visit urgent care soon to rule out other medical causes. These symptoms could be related to:

* Blood pressure changes
* Blood sugar issues
* Medication side effects
* Dehydration or electrolyte imbalances
* Lingering effects from your recent bronchitis
* Other physical health conditions

The hyperventilating could indeed be related to your recent bronchitis, but combined with the other symptoms, it's important to get a full medical workup. What to do next:

Please contact your psychiatrist right away to let them know about these new symptoms—they may want to review your medications. Also schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor as soon as possible for a physical examination.

While anxiety and panic can manifest in various ways, the physical severity you're describing needs medical evaluation to ensure nothing else is contributing. Your instinct that these feel different from your usual panic attacks is worth listening to.

In the meantime, try to stay safe by sitting down when you feel these episodes coming on, and don't hesitate to call for help if symptoms worsen. You're doing the right thing by reaching out and asking questions about what you're experiencing.
