How can you improve your eating habits when depression has taken away your appetite?

Loss of appetite is a really common symptom of depression - almost half of people with major depressive disorder experience it. Many MyDepressionTeam members share similar struggles, with one saying, "It's like work trying to eat most days."

The good news is there are practical, low-effort strategies that can help you nourish your body even when you don't feel like eating.

Here are some tips to make eating more manageable:

• Eat small meals or snacks throughout the day instead of forcing yourself through large meals
• Set phone reminders or leave notes where you'll see them to prompt you to eat
• Keep protein-rich snacks on hand that require minimal prep - nut butter sandwiches, cheese and crackers, yogurt with nuts, or hard-boiled eggs
• Stock ready-made options like canned soup, bagged salads, or frozen meals for low-energy days
• Try liquid nutrition like smoothies or protein shakes when solid food doesn't appeal to you
• Eat your favorite foods at any time of day - breakfast for dinner is totally fine if it motivates you to eat
• Meal prep on better days so you have ready-to-heat options when your appetite is low

One member shared: "I am trying to cook on the weekends when my husband is home and make extra so I have something nutritious to warm up and eat throughout the week."

You should talk to your healthcare provider if you're experiencing unintended weight loss of 10 pounds or more, excessive tiredness, or if your loss of appetite doesn't improve. They might recommend working with a mental health professional or nutritionist to support your recovery.
