How Do I Overcome My Fear Of Gaining Weight?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've had a mild eating disorder since I was about 14 years old. After hitting puberty, I turned to food for comfort which resulted in me putting on quite a bit of weight. I was never obese or anything, but I was a bit chubby in my preteen / teen years. I became very insecure about my body and obsessed over my weight. I was always on some form of diet, would constantly starve myself, and monitored every little thing I ate. I couldn't even eat a cookie without feeling extremely guilty and anxious… read more

id say you made progress but as I am in treatment now your mental thoughts are still very disordered. Id say self compassion exercises might help to improve your mental health. Also weight has nothing to do with the severity of the eating disorder. The thought take longer to deal with and a therapist to avoid a relapse would be helpful to you and get rid of the thoughts. in the meal time id suggest challenging yourself with food that scares you and challenging your thoughts as well as much as you can. If you can challenge these thoughts you will see an improvement and less frequent thoughts, much harder done alone. If you want to talk just message me Id like to help you if i can with the tools i have been given to deal with my ED

do you have or are you currently seeing a counsellor/therapist for anything ? if so then i would suggest talking to them about this because even if it is not their expertise they would be able to recommend someone to you, if not then maybe it would be worth finding someone that you can see so that they can help you avoid falling back into bad habits and help you to overcome the thoughts and feelings that you are having. or perhaps see if there is an eating disorder support group near to you, because even though you may not consider yourself to have an eating disorder right at the minute, they would help you to stay that way and help you stop from falling back into having one. i have never had an eating disorder myself and so don't know how you feel as such but i can and do empathise with you. i have weight issues myself but that is because i am obese, partly through my depression limiting my ability, determination or motivation to exercise or to monitor properly what i eat and partly because i love my food and don't control my portion sizes etc. sorry i couldn't be of any real help but please know that you are not alone on this, there are others on this site that will have experience of this and be better able to advise you. best wishes x

Just like someone who suffers from anorexia… Keep in mind eating is not a bad thing… If your job requires a lot of physical exertion and high protein is probably good. The key to anything is moderation and eating healthy… Variety of diet
