AMINOKETONE ANTIDEPRESSANT
Overview
Wellbutrin SR is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). It is intended for use in adults and is not approved for children. Wellbutrin SR carries a boxed warning due to the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults. Treatment should be periodically reassessed to determine continued need and appropriate dosage. Wellbutrin SR is also known by its drug name, bupropion hydrochloride.
Bupropion hydrochloride is an aminoketone antidepressant. It works by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain — neurotransmitters believed to help regulate mood and relieve depressive symptoms.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Wellbutrin SR is taken by mouth in sustained-release tablet form. After three days on the initial starting dose, the dose may be increased. Wellbutrin SR should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
