I was turned down in Mississippi, but when I moved to Georgia and found a doctor I had no problem 😊

Getting disability benefits for depression can be a challenging and lengthy process, but it's definitely possible. The key is understanding what's required and being well-prepared.

To qualify, the Social Security Administration (SSA) needs to see that your depression is severe enough to prevent you from working for at least a year. You'll also need to show at least five of these symptoms:

- Depressed mood
- Loss of interest in most activities
- Changes in appetite with weight loss or gain
- Sleep disturbance
- Psychomotor changes (agitation or slowed movements/speech)
- Low energy
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Difficulty concentrating or thinking
- Thoughts of death Beyond symptoms, you must also meet one of these conditions:

- Two marked limitations or one extreme limitation in mental functioning (like challenges with understanding, social interaction, or managing daily life)
- A serious and persistent depressive disorder documented for at least two years, with ongoing treatment Many MyDepressionTeam members have found the process frustrating. One shared, "I am currently fighting for disability, and they said it could take a year or longer. I don't know if I can wait that long."

Having thorough documentation is really important β€” including medical records, medication lists, and provider contact details. If denied, you have 60 days to appeal, and options include requesting reconsideration, a hearing, or even pursuing a federal court case.

Consulting a lawyer or disability advocate can make the process smoother.
