How can you best handle depression at work?

Managing depression while working requires a combination of self-care strategies and setting healthy boundaries. Here are some effective approaches:

Establish Consistent Routines
Having a set work schedule can bring beneficial structure to your day, especially when feeling apathetic or distracted. Try to maintain regular sleep times, take your medication consistently, and eat regular meals.

Make Your Breaks Non-Negotiable
Don't skip your scheduled lunch breaks or other breaks throughout the day. Use this time to recharge by getting outside for a walk, practicing deep breathing, listening to music, or meeting a friend. Block your calendar or wear headphones to show you're unavailable during break times.

Get Help at Home
When work demands are high, lighten your load at home. Consider ordering groceries for delivery, asking family for help with tasks, or hiring help when needed. When energy feels limited, don't overdo it.

Find Purpose in Your Work
Seek meaning in what you do, whether through mentoring a new employee or leading a project for a cause you care about. Having goals and perceived value in your work helps promote well-being and can ward off loss of interest. Consider Workplace Accommodations
If depression is affecting your productivity, talk to your human resources department or supervisor. Under the Americans With Disabilities Act, employers must provide reasonable accommodations for mental health conditions, such as schedule adjustments for therapy appointments or modified break times.

You're never required to disclose your depression to anyone at work. However, if you feel comfortable sharing and need accommodations, that choice is yours to make. Anyone you disclose to must keep it confidential.

Review Your Treatment Options
Ask your HR department about employee assistance programs that connect you with mental health providers and resources. If your current treatment isn't working well or causes side effects that impact your work, talk to your mental health professional about adjusting medication or adding therapy.
