Not telling

I don't want to sound ungrateful but I dont ask for things at Christmas. I usually just get myself what I want. For years probably at five now. My sister is really into giving me the nightmare before Christmas merch. I'm not even sure why. I like the movie but that's it We went to see it in theaters when I was fifteen I think. I'm 36 now and she brought me ornaments that I like and the funkos but the weird ones were pajamas that were way too small for me and sheets and a blanket. They are cool… read more

Gift giving has always been disastrous in my family. Everyone leaves the room wondering if this is their real family, or if they'd been abducted by look-alike imposters. I'm sure the looks on our faces during unwrapping are priceless...

That said, we've developed a sense of humor about it, take pictures of us and our ridiculous new possessions, and trade with each other if possible. Returns and thrift shop donations are inevitable.

How do others handle unwanted gifts and feeling disconnected during the holidays when dealing with depression?

You're definitely not alone in feeling disconnected during the holidays. Many MyDepressionTeam members share similar experiences about struggling with holiday expectations and preferring quiet time over forced celebrations.

One member expressed: "The thought of the holidays is already bringing me down." Another shared feeling disappointed about not being invited to family dinner, showing how complicated holiday dynamics can be.

About Gift-Giving Stress:

The gift situation with your sister sounds frustrating, especially when it creates potential for drama. Setting boundaries around gifts is valid, even if it feels uncomfortable. Using direct "I" statements can help, like "I appreciate your thoughtfulness, but I'm trying to simplify this year."

Feeling Better Alone:

It's completely okay to feel better spending time with your cat than celebrating. Depression doesn't take holidays off, and forcing yourself into situations that worsen your mood isn't helpful. Your mental health comes first.

What You Can Do:

- Consider suggesting an alternate, smaller gathering that feels less overwhelming
- Be honest that you're not feeling well enough for big celebrations
- Remember that connecting with loved ones doesn't have to mean traditional celebrations
- Give yourself permission to skip events that drain you

The pressure to feel festive when you're depressed is real. Protecting your peace isn't ungrateful—it's necessary.

Ya we put on a happy face then talk behind our backs only makes a paranoid present. I don’t like talking bad about someone even if there poor I’ll help them when I can. Peace
