Agree with the comments and questions to and for the Dr.

Having rapids in a day is exhausting. When they combine It's like 2 people with bullhorns shouting at each other at the same time. I lie down. I veg. on mindless shows, I play music or practice at least. I listen to music. Rest is my main need. Like I said, it's exhausting.

What are your experiences with mixed episodes of bipolar disorder, and what treatment options exist for acute onset?

Mixed episodes can be particularly challenging because you're experiencing symptoms of both mania and depression simultaneously. A MyDepressionTeam member with similar experiences might feel the highs of racing thoughts and energy alongside intense sadness or anxiety.

For acute treatment of mixed episodes, doctors typically use:

* Mood stabilizers - Since you're already on these, your doctor may adjust the dosage or try a different one
* Antipsychotic medications - These help manage both manic and depressive symptoms during acute episodes
* Combination therapy - Often, treating mixed episodes requires using multiple medications together

It's important to note that if you're taking antidepressants, they should always be paired with a mood stabilizer to prevent triggering manic symptoms or rapid cycling.

Since mixed episodes can be severe, sometimes hospitalization may be necessary to stabilize symptoms quickly and safely. Your treatment plan will likely also include psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), alongside medications.

Given that you've been on mood stabilizers for years, it might be worth discussing with your doctor whether your current regimen needs adjustment or if adding another medication could better manage these mixed episodes.

No undermining at all. It's a tough road and the pathology changes over time, or so I've read. The depressive becomes more frequent. That may be for bipolar 2.

Mixed states are intriguing but it's been so long since I've not had stabilizers that I can't recall. I know politics can make me manic and I finally figured that out a couple of years ago. I'm wise to the symptoms now, plus med increases.

I think you're doing great. Getting a Cape buffalo, let alone a balrog, by the horns is no easy task.
