I'm starting think or believe I am a bad person after the break up. I know the relationship wasn't good. But I'm starting to think everything that happened is my fault. Even though we are broken up. He still lives me and my parents. Cause he has nowhere else to go. Every day is starting to feel like I can't get out of bed. I isolate myself from everyone in the house. Because I still feel heartbroken and feel like I am the worst person in the world. I just wish I ended things before it got to… read more

Question: Am I a bad person for feeling guilty and depressed after my breakup, even though my ex still lives with me and my parents?

No, you are not a bad person. Breakups are naturally upsetting and can trigger feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, and depression. The situation is especially challenging since your ex is still living in your home, which can make it harder to heal and move forward. Your feelings of guilt and self-doubt are common symptoms of depression, not a reflection of your character.

The symptoms you're describing - difficulty getting out of bed, isolation, anxiety, and sleep problems - are signs that you may need additional support to help you through this difficult time. Here are some important things to remember:

• Ending an unhealthy relationship takes courage and doesn't make you a bad person
• Your feelings of guilt and anxiety are temporary, even though they feel overwhelming right now
• Having your ex still in your living space can make healing more difficult
• It's important to seek help from a healthcare provider to address your depression symptoms
• Consider talking to a counselor who can help you work through these feelings and rebuild your self-worth

Remember that relationships end for many reasons, and it's rarely one person's fault entirely. Focus on taking care of yourself and getting the support you need during this challenging time.

you are most absolutely *NOT* a bad person, @A MyDepressionTeam Member, none of us are. Some things are a good mix, but, like oil and water, some things aren't. It makes us question our self-worth when things go awry in a relationship, totally regardless of whomever may be "at fault." But, being able to recognize an issue and question yourself can also be a healing tool. The only thing I can't offer advice on is being heartbroken; there's no more draining sadness than that of rejection by a loved one. It may take an inordinate amount of time, but, that, too, shall pass.

Just try to hang in there, life has a way of working itself out when we least expect it to.

I only know what you are sharing but it may be important to have a mediator involved, can be a family member or a friend. Both of you being there, not working so lots of dead time, I am not sure of the financial situation but as you said you both need separation so you both can heal. In Canada we have free counseling for stuff like this, is there anything available for you? Good thoughts and prayers sent your way

Well, stupid thumb splint hit the back button and everything I wrote to you went bye-bye...

I was trying to wax philosophical and be comforting by explaining my take on our emotional health issues.

The below will have to suffice...

p.s. Yes, I know I've used this before, but the power of those four words is inescapable...
