No. Major Depressive Disorder is a medical condition likely caused by a combination of factors including genetics and environment. Someone may have a genetic predisposition for developing depression but also may have other protective factors - some inherited, some environmental, that protect from the development of depression, or minimize its severity. Growing up in families with a history of depression means you likely inherited the propensity to develop MDD, but also, being raised by folks with depressive thoughts and behaviors, you learned depressive thinking and reacting patterns. If a parent with MDD models emotional dysregulation and poor coping mechanism (social withdrawal, rage, negative self-talk) the child sees these are ways to cope with difficult events and emotions . Blaming one's self for a medical or mental health condition isn't accurate and doesn't help with recovery or health. That said, it's pretty common for us (people with depression) to blame ourselves for it, and blame ourselves for everything that's wrong in the world! You are in good company. And it's not your parents or grandparents fault either. It just happens. Many try to treat depression with medication and therapy and good friends - and are often successful in managing it. Sometimes even trying to cope and be well is just too much. There are times when even trying is just too hard. This too shall pass. This too shall pass. Don't condemn yourself for those days when you just can't try anymore. Try not to give up. Because this too shall pass. Remember there are people struggling in silence, just like you. Give yourself some of the same compassion you have for others who struggle.. When you think you have nothing left to give, you can always give yourself grace
My mum suffered with depression I suffer from anxiety now but it's my belief since my husband had health issues I struggled , it can some times be what life throws at us that makes us react like we do ,please dont blame yourself because no one chooses to feel depressed be kind to yourself
You have a choice of what you think. Thoughts create feelings. Try to dwell on your strengths instead of weaknesses.
