I live in the uk and suffer with severe depression. My GP recommended I see a therapist but I am worried about what she will talk about. I don't understand why I feel the way I do so how can I explain it to a stranger. Any advice would be greatly received thank you
The best advice I could give is be honest and open. They can't help bring light to the dark places or find and help bring down the walls if they don't know where they are. Personally, I was VERY apprehensive to let a stranger in but only giving bits and pieces is only cheating yourself.
I've found this group to have lots of good ideas ๐ก. I hope you find the same ๐ธ
Hi Angela. It can be a very daunting process, thinking about starting therapy. And the concern that you will be made vulnerable can be very frightening so I'd like to break it down and hopefully make it far less daunting a prospect.
A good therapist/psychologist will simply take a history & ask you what you'd like to gain from your visits (better management of symptoms, improved relationships, drug & alcohol issues, domestic violence or just someone neutral to vent to etc). They will discuss with you what types of treatments & therapies are available and what will best meet your needs. You are in control of everything that happens and you can pause or stop at any time. If something sensitive comes up you need only reveal what you confortable with. It really can be enormously helpful. The important thing here is that you are totally in control. I hope this was of some help to you. All the best!
Hey there๐ I finally gave in a few weeks ago and went to a therapist. She led the conversation during the first session- she wants to know what's beneath the surface. The second session she asked how my week went I told her then she asked me how
I felt about whatever happened and she has made so many helpful suggestions for how to live with depression. That it's just a part of many things that make up: me. I find it very helpful to go to a therapist. Good luck ๐๐ผ
Sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger. No judgement, no bias
