Is Medication A Bad Thing?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I came to terms with taking medication to help me with my depression an anxiety a long time ago and accepted it. The other day a colleague of mine asked me "you're not really you if you take that kind of medication though, right? Ever thought about just not taking them?"

I'd had people tell me that they wouldn't want to be on antidepressants or anything… read more

It's like saying to someone taking insulin for their diabetes. People are so misinformed about mental illness and say the most insensitive and offensive things. Unfortunately, some are influenced by this and quit talking meds or suffer in silence. I've had people say that I'm not praying and trusting God.

People don,t understand that depression is an actual physical and chemical thing. Medication doesn't alter your personality it helps you to be how you were before you had depression. PLease don't stop taking it without your doctor,s approval, could be very dangerous. People never ask diabetics to go without insulin, this makes me so angry. It is admirable to tell people you are on medication because the stigma needs to stop, but because people can be hurtful I am very careful who I open up to.

Oh no don't worry guys I'm not thinking of stopping my medication (at some point in the future and appropriately yes but not any time soon). It was just the first time I'd come across someone with that attitude 🤔
