Psychiatrist Or Counselor
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have went to 3 counselors and they didn't work for me. Would a psychiatrist be better??

Honestly it varies for every person so I'd say if social workers or counselors haven't worked for you, try a coordinated care place with a prescriber and a team of therapists. You can try different approaches like behavioral therapy but lots of places have interesting options like art or music therapy.
Nobody can say what's right for you, so you're on the right track speaking up and looking for what works. It's a tough journey but there's definitely better options out there.

It really depend's on what the problems/issues are that you have?
Over my year's of un-wellness I have usually had multiple people I worked with - Psychiatrist, counsellor, psychologist, and sometimes a Support worker (usually a Mental Health Nurse).
Sometimes it can be good to have people from different disciplines helping you, as I really don't feel it is something that one particular person can "fix/solve/cure".

It's important to find a therapist/counselor who can best meet your needs and you feel comfortable with and trust. I would have suggested that you bring up your concerns in your sessions with one or more of your previous counselors about how you feel. If this therapist/counselor is truly a professional, that therapist/counselor should understand and appreciate your concerns. If it's depression you are experiencing, for example, then finding someone who has a lot of experience treating depressed clients is important. Ask around for recommendations for good therapists in your area. I don't think just switching to a psychiatrist is necessarily the answer unless you want to add a psychiatrist for medication purposes. Good luck!!

It depends on the psychiatrist! I had one that kept his back to me the whole appointment and I walked out more depressed than when I went in. Then I got one who let me talk and cry for an hour, and who was really empathetic, and then he put me on an antidepressant that was magic!
