Mirtazapine
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

My gp has weaned me off my old anti depressants and told me to start on mirtazapine today. Does anyone else take these and do they work. I'm worried about side effects and I can feel my anxiety tring to kick in 😔

Hi I've been on Mirtazapine for a few years, think she took me off Prozac as it wasn't working any more. I also take doloxitene which is meant to be for pain relief, but I think the two together work well. I have been going to groups and started volunteering too. o all in all its been a good wee stint at feeling 'well' . Havent kept well for so long in a lot of years, so happy on them. but they are different for everyone, so hope they are ok for you too. 😊

@Mirtazapine.I have just stopped taking these. I had the most disgusting taste in my mouth. I was also piling on weight. Mirtazapine increases appetite, according my GP (now she tells me) I was also eating mints or chocolate in an attempt to eradicate the taste in my mouth. I also take Venlafaxine 150mg this was initially increased by a further 75mg, but resulted in y bad facial sweats. Not good when it drips into your food when out with friends. The Mirtazapine was introduced in 3 stages up to 45mg. Now I have to discuss my options again with the Psychiatrist. Hoping in the mean time I can hold it together and not go down a big black hole.

I too have been on both venlafaxine and mirtazipine (with some lithium thrown in for good measure) for some years.

It's very good for sleeping(!) so take care if you need an early start the following day. The big side effect is I constantly crave carbs - no matter how much I've just eaten. It's not been great for my waistline...

My 82yr old Mother is on Mirtazapine. She takes it at night in bed as she says sleep soon kicks in. She is doing very well on it. In fact she's much better than I am....x
