Terribly sorry for your loss. But there really isn't anything wrong In loving someone. The word "step" means nothing where love is concerned. I'm sure he knew how much he meant to you and even if you couldn't get home the fact that you cared enough to want to be home means more than if you did nothing. Life is difficult I hope you find strength during this troubling time.

Certainly it is ok to be sad. In my family the word "step" means nothing. People and relationships are important regardless of title. He made a mark on your heart. Keep in contact with your family heck, if they can put a phone to his ear and tell him what he meant to you.
