Depression, Family And Stigma
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do your family members know about your depression, and are they supportive?
Do you find that you have to hide your status in fear of being labelled a "crazy person?"

My family believes it's just a phase and I will snap out off it, which can get really hard. But don't be scared, you know what's the truth. You're not a crazy person! It's not our fault the chemicals in our brains don't want to function like healthy people's brains.

Yes it is really hard for me with my family Bc they have struggles of their own and see my life and all I'd accomplished before my life fell totally apart, and they don't understand what I've gone and go through. I hate being called "crazy" more than anything but my family chalks it up to me being crazy, lazy and selfish when it's absolutely none of those things. I also get told that I shouldn't be depressed Bc they have it so much worse, and I try very hard to be supportive and compassionate toward their struggles but don't get the same in return. It's frustrating but finding sites like this where I know there's support and others who do understand is so incredibly helpful Bc I find myself hiding my struggles and bad days from my family so I'm spared the usual names and mockery.

My parents and brother all have depression themselves so you think they would be supportive but they are the complete opposite. No help whatsoever.

Same here @A MyDepressionTeam Member, I get pretty upset when I know I've been irritable and spiteful. It's like I've got a mental chalk board, adding up the guilt, 1 day at a time.
