ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTIC
Overview
Bysanti is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and for the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar 1 disorder in adults. Bysanti is also known by its drug name, milsaperidone.
Bysanti is classified as an atypical antipsychotic. Scientists believe it works by helping to balance certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in the brain, which can reduce or control symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Bysanti is taken orally twice daily with or without food. The dose is gradually titrated (increased) at the start of treatment to reduce the risk of orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up). After titration, the recommended maintenance dose is taken twice daily. People with certain genetic differences in drug metabolism (CYP2D6 poor metabolizers) and those with liver problems may need different dosing schedules. Bysanti should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Side effects
Common side effects of Bysanti for schizophrenia include dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, nasal congestion, orthostatic hypotension, somnolence (sleepiness), rapid heart rate (tachycardia), and increased weight.
For bipolar mania, common side effects include tachycardia (rapid heart rate), dizziness, dry mouth, increased liver enzymes, nasal congestion, increased weight, hypotension (low blood pressure), and somnolence.
Rare but serious side effects may include increased risk of death in elderly people with dementia-related psychosis, cerebrovascular events (such as stroke), QTc interval prolongation (a heart rhythm problem that can lead to sudden death), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a life-threatening reaction with fever and muscle rigidity), tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), significant changes in metabolism (such as high blood sugar, cholesterol, or weight), seizures, low white blood cell counts, priapism (prolonged, painful erections), potential for cognitive impairment (such as problems with thinking, memory, or attention) or motor impairment (such as difficulty with movement), and intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery.
