I am really struggling with overthinking. It could get so bad that I cannot get anything done. Plus it really affects my emotional state. When I start to overthink I tell myself not to go there. For a while that worked but now it doesn't. If I keep busy, I don't seem to ruminate as bad. But the moment I stop I go back to overthinking. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to control it, or maybe stop it?

I have this issue too and I found this webpage that I'm in the process of reading. I haven't read it all so I'm not sure how helpful it is. For me I write it down and then do something else or go to sleep. If I'm going to sleep I have to write the thoughts down before going to sleep or they keep going round and round in my head all night long and I wake up still thinking about it. Sometimes I imagine erasing a whiteboard or whitewashing a fence while also clearing out the chatter in my head. https://cogbtherapy.com/stop-ruminating
Guilty as charged. Not so much with the racing thoughts at night, but my thoughts find themselves sounding like the NY Stock Exchange bidding floor several times throughout the day. And depending on what the thinking revolves around, I *always* think the absolute worst, because that's what I've been taught to expect from a young age.
Here are some of the things I did to distract myself when ruminating:
I would watch TV and crochet
I would drive to dollar stores and browse; sometimes I would buy something, sometimes I wouldn’t
I found a rec center where I could play cards or games at no cost.
One might find a solution in forcing your attention on something else. Art and gardening come to mind along with cooking. True, some people reflect while engaged in hobbies but the idea is losing yourself in something else. I have all the ones I listed plus reading.
