Members shared deeply personal experiences about the most damaging misconception of depression: that people can simply snap out of it, get over it, or stop feeling sorry for themselves, with many recounting hurtful dismissals like being called lazy, weak, or told they have nothing to be depressed about. Several members described the pain of not being believed or taken seriously by family, coworkers, doctors, and even dentists who minimized their struggles as just part of life, while emphasizing that depression is a real medical illness requiring ongoing treatment and management, not weakness or choice. A recurring theme was the strength required to live with depression daily, navigate medication side effects, advocate for proper care, and continue functioning despite an invisible illness that others cannot see or understand, with many finding solidarity in knowing they are not alone in facing these harmful stereotypes.

A common misconception is that anyone who is suffering from depression looks depressed. Some of us can look very 'normal' and can appear to be fine, but are suffering greatly.

"Get over it!" "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!" I don't know how many times I've heard that. We can't just get over it; it's an illness. Maybe it can ebb and flow, but we can't just pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and get over it, just like we can't get over diabetes!
