i finally was able to get a tredmill this year. i am very out of shape and overweight. ive been using it for the last five days and i read that i go up a minute each time to build up and thats been fine. i have been getting this pain in my right leg. i was wondering if that is normal? the longest i could go the first go was ten minutes, i know not good at all but i will be up to fifteen minutes tonight. it has been helping with my anxiety when i can use it. i use it around midnight and on… read more

Hi Kaye I'm a runner myself so I know all about aches and pains. If you are just starting out and you are a bit overweight and you haven't exercised for a while you will find you get aches sometimes. It should go away quickly and not cause you any problems. You could instead of increasing keep it the same for a couple of days. You should be proud of yourself for doing it and don't think of it as a step back. Everyone you take is one more than someone on the couch. Make sure you rest and drink plenty of water too. If it has been a significant amount of time since you have done any sort of workout, some minor joint and muscle pain is common and to be expected.
A few suggestions I would make . . .

1) as mentioned by MichelleHelgren, go slow to start. Don't push too hard too fast.

2) before you get on the treadmill, and after you get off it, try to do some basic stretches to make sure your muscles and joints can recover from the work correctly.

3) stay hydrated. If you don't already, have a bottle of water with you while you are on the treadmill. It will help stave off soreness a bit better than waiting until you are done to drink water.

4) I love that you are ramping up your time with the workout. Keep that motivation, but remember something . . . ANY amount of work is good, so if there is a day that you find yourself getting more fatigued than usual, don't feel bad for having to rest. Rest as you need, and work as you can. Eventually, you will need to rest less often, and you will be able to go further without fatigue.

Lastly, know that we are proud of you! Continue to kick ass! Small efforts like this serve as HUGE inspiration to everyone watching . . . so pat yourself on the back for that, and keep going!!!

My daughter downloaded exercises for me to do. I have arthritis so it's challenging. I struggled with them. I wish I had a treadmill to be able to do something at least.

I recently bought a treadmill and that seems to be going better than the exercises. I feel good about myself for a while after using the treadmill. Persevere, don't give up, there is hope for all of us.
