I go out, and go to church but really struggle socially. I feel I will never make connections at church I'm to afraid to reach out. And then embarrassed to admit it. I pray alot in my head and sometimes in a quiet moment. But rarely feel anything at all? What's wrong with me? I feel lost.
I was told by my therapist to keep trying even if at first you can’t really be social, as time goes by you do become more comfortable just a little each time.
Thank you, some really great ideas. My church does have a small group.
I first want to start out by saying that I don’t think there is anything wrong with you. Meeting new people with common interests is challenging for many people. I have a hard time also and mental illness and low self esteem contribute to the challenges. After reading this, a few ideas came to mind, I hope they can help with your search in connecting with others.
My first thought would be set yourself up for success and take baby steps. If this has been a challenge for a long time, it could take some time to plant the seeds. Try not to get discouraged if there just isn’t connections at first or every time. There is a lot of reading materials out there on this subject. Lots of books and lots of articles come up with a “how to be social” google search. I would encourage you look into this with more specifics to the hurdles you face. Lastly, I think small groups are a great way to get to know people. I prefer this because I feel less pressure. I can get to know individuals more slowly and kinda indirectly. Does the church you attend have any small groups such as a bible study or luncheon. Also, check out ‘Meetup’. Webpage or app. My understanding of it is that it’s like a local billboard where activities and events are organized. The purpose is to connect people with similar interests. Everyone that is there, also went to Meetup for the same purpose. I’ve heard there’s a huge variety of activities, events, interests.
Best of luck and wishes for success!
I know how you feel. Its hard to put on a fake smile, especially at church, where your supposed to be happy for some reason. It's hard to be social, but in a church setting, it seemed to be harder to do. I categorize myself as a loner, and at church, there is no "safety island" to swim to.
I am now Athiest-Agnostic. Didn't find refuge in the so-called "loving arms" of a god i couldn't see.... or have a "personal relationship" with jesus, when it was only a one-sided conversation.
That might be not what you wanted to hear, but that.s okay. Just wanted to put my three cents in.....
Thank you!
