Hey guys. I've been really curious about the treatment of people at mental hospitals. I personally have stayed at two mental hospitals (and I will describe both of those experiences later) but I was just wondering how many of you guys have ever been admitted? What happened that got you there? How long did you stay? What was the place like? What were the staff and other patients like? Did you ever get restrained? Did you get forced to take medication? Do you feel like the experience helped you at… read more
I have had 2 short hospializations following suicide attempts. They were both at regular hospitals but a locked psychiatric unit. I was treated well. I had more choices during the voluntary stay versus the involuntary one. No restraints were used. Each stay was only about 3 days. I think a longer stay would be necessary to be helpful for anything more than getting through the initial crisis of a suicide attempt.
I have been in a psychiatric hospital twice...once because one of my meds made me shake and I couldn't stop....the 2nd time I went to change meds, I knew I couldn't be by myself...I also was treated with electric shock therapy...I didn't like the way it made me feel so I didn't continue treatment after I was released.
I voluntarily admitted myself for safety when I felt suicidal. It was pretty much on the weekend so very little planned activities were done. I was only in for 3 to 4 days and both times. I basically just felt safe there that I did not feel at home.
@A MyDepressionTeam Member Sounds like that really sucked. Would you mind sharing some of those stories? I'm just curious.
part 2
i personally have suffered with depression since i was a teenager, i'm now 52, and over the years at various times when my depression has been really bad i have often wanted to sign myself into somewhere like a mental health hospital but don't feel that i was ever bad enough to be allowed to do so. it wasn't so much a case of wanting to be in the hospital so much as wanting to be able to go somewhere where i would be away from my life and all it entailed for a week or two or even a month, like a refuge/sanctuary but i don't know of any places except one which is a long way off and you have to pay and it has an extremely lengthy waiting list !!
i used to think mental health hospitals/institutions were very scary places full of complete "nutcases" running around screeching, headbanging walls, pissing and shitting themselves etc but since my Dad was a patient in one and since seeing various documentary's on such places i now know that, although there are a few exceptions, that most are good, clean, safe, helpful and therapeutic places.
