Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question đź’

I had many series of ECT(100+), mainly because I'm resistant to meds. It helped for a very short time afterwards, but there was lots of memory loss.

I was depressed enough that I looked forward to the procedures. They put you to sleep and that feeling of "going under" was worth it. When I was in recovery, I was usually tearful. The staff would say I cried because of the anesthetic? Ha, I was crying because I was still alive.

Pet scans have shown a lot of "damage"? in my frontal and temporal… read more

I am treatment resistant so neither meds or other treatments like ECT don't work for me, I tried them with no affect.

@A MyDepressionTeam Member. @A MyDepressionTeam Member. they have helped each time I’ve had them. But I don’t trust what the doctors say. They told me there’d be little or no memory loss.

I've been having them off and on since 2003. They always help and are the reason I can stay away from being an inpatient sometimes. I asked my pdoc once if there was any relation to ECT and dementia and alzheimers and he told me that studies show that there isn't. I think they don't help everyone so it's an individual choice but they have saved my life more than once. Best of luck!!

Thank you! Much appreciated......the benefits of my ECT didn't last long, so I doubt I'd do it again.

I’ve had many many courses of ECT also. Between 1990’s and about 2008. It’s funny you should mention the great feeling of going under, I completely understand. And the initial feeling of waking up.
Anyway I don’t remember anything during the time I was getting the treatments—family have gotten used to my “smile and nod” when anything is brought up that happened during that time. My only regret was that I missed my son growing up. But it was necessary so I don’t regret it.
My short term memory hasn’t suffered much, just the usual age related stuff. I don’t have Alzheimer’s. I am however losing more of my long term memory.
Don’t know if this is of any help. It’s not often that I meet someone who’s the experienced what I have
