Members responded with deep empathy to someone struggling with depression, increased drinking, and self-harm during the holidays, with many sharing that they too feel joyless, numb, and overwhelmed. Several members opened up about their own battles, including losing careers, feeling like a burden to their children, and barely leaving the house, showing the original poster they are far from alone. A recurring theme was the danger of using alcohol to cope with depression, with community members gently encouraging connection and support as a healthier alternative.

You are not alone hun. Please don't drink. It only makes the depression worse. Even ordinary people get depressed when they drink. Depression + drink = 2x Depression and 10x hangover 5x Longer. Don't make it harder on yourself. Huggs and Luv and Christmas blessings.

Finding any joy in life is so difficult for those of us suffering from depression. The only joy that I find these days is finding people who understand and it's only people who suffer,or have suffered from depression, that can understand. Catch 22, spending too much time with people with depression can undermine your ability to overcome it. It's a very paradoxical illness. I've had a lot of experience with alcohol and none of it was very good. It's probably not helping you to stop self harming. You start drinking the bottle but it ends up drinking you. Some people suggest that the whole basis of depression is unfulfilled expectations. Today the media etc. raises our expectations for and off ourselves. Some of these are both unreasonable and impossible. This puts immense pressure on the individual, especially when they don't realise how unrealistic and Impossible, these expectations are. Alcohol appears to releive this pressure initially, but eventually it just leads to thoughts, words and deeds that just add to the pressure. My advice to you would be to avoid it as best you can which I realise is not always easy. And I appreciate what you're saying about this season of joy when you feel joyless. It sucks. But then again I think Christmas sucks anyway. If a man called Jesus ever did exist, and he taught what they say he taught, I'm not sure he would appreciate how his birthday is commemorated while half the world starves. Sorry for the rant :)

I too am going through severe depression!! I feel the same way bc without my daughter I don’t think I’d be around. I can’t work been on disability now for about 5 years. I used to be a teacher I loved my job. Now I barely leave the house. I feel so guilty for not being a better mom.

I am dealing with really severe depression and anxiety as well. It makes it very difficult to concentrate and even get through the day anymore! I am totally broke and can't keep a job for the life of me. I am so ready to give up but I can't leave my kids. They spend most of their time with my ex, but somehow I need to find the strength in me to prove to them that I am strong enough to be their father. I just don't know how or if I will ever make it to that point. I so want to and know it will take alot of work and devotion to get there.
