Lithium Making Depression Worse?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was prescribed lithium a few months back, getting started on it was hard for the first week or 2 and then it seemed to change things for the better. Last month I was upped to 300 mg x2 daily, but I feel that it started making things worse. My depression has seemed to reach very very bad levels. I was thinking and the only thing that could bring it to what it is now had to be the change. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with Lithium and if it can be the cause of my worsening… read more

This makes sense. Lithium is an anti-manic agent, meaning it lowers mood. On the contrary, it is also a mild antidepressant and is used to augment the effects of antidepressants. It sounds like you may still be adjusting to it, so, I would give it another week or two, as it can take up to 4 weeks to adjust to a dose change of lithium. Each time I change my dose, I'm really panicky for a week or two. Also, lithium is not something you can stop suddenly. You have to taper off slowly to avoid erratic mood swings and mania (if you have ever experienced mania).

Also, with lithium, what matters is not how much you are taking, but how much you retain in your blood stream and how well you respond to it. You should be having your blood lithium level checked four days after a dose change to be sure you're in the theraputic range, as well as your liver and kidney function to make sure the lithium isn't having any toxic effects on them.

Worst drug ever. I don't have bipolar. It was not a good experience.. Only took for 1-2 weeks and stopped.

I was never prescribed Lithium. My doc gave me Depakote ER. But we had to keep adjusting the dosage constantly as the side effects were bad! Finally now we found my correct dosage. 750 MG at bedtime. To be taken forever, as per my doc tells me
