Experience With Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

My psychiatrist and I are considering embarking on the long ECT journey, but I'm wondering if anyone here has actually had it? I'm treatment resistant major depressive disorder, would appreciate hearing anyone's experience!

I did ECT’s once a month for 3 years! I’ll tell you what it did. After each treatment I would have a migraine headache for at least 24 hours , my brain felt liked it had been robbed of all its knowledge for a short time then I would feel ok. They kept saying that i would feel better, I wouldn’t feel so sad soon. Wasn’t true. I lost years of memories, I sometimes can’t remember what you told me 2 minutes ago, 5, 2 hours. I forget important dates, I can’t remember if I took my medication or even where I put my medication. My memory is so shot I have to ask my kids about their history! It’s super bad, and I never got one but better.
I wish I had never heard of ECT . It washed me of so many childhood memories and all of my 30’s and 40’s and more. I couldn’t give you a date of what happened to me when if my life depended upon it.
Don’t do it! 🤐

Good luck with it. I would only consider it as a very last resort. I didn't have any luck with it. It took away all of my memories and my husband said it was like living with someone with Alzheimer's. He had to tell me to get up, shower, dress, eat and when to go to bed. I had 6 months of inpatient treatment. I've also had a few bouts of a week to ten days in the years since. Depression is a long journey, with many ups and downs. I've asked to have a permanent note put on my file, that I never want ECT again.

My mother did and she ended up with irreversible brain damage. Whoever did this to her has caused my problems, because she couldn't care for me. Wish I could sue Social Services.

I have had ECT before. It has been the only thing to provide any relief from depression and suicidal thoughts. I didn't have the headache or nausea because the hospital that did it gave me medication ahead of time to prevent it. I had some memory loss but if I had the opportunity to do it again I would rather have the memory loss than the intense never ending depression and chronic suicidal thoughts.

I had about 15 rounds of ECT about 11 years ago for major depression (I was diagnosed at 16) and severe post partum depresssion. All it did for me was give me bad headaches after the treatment an cause memory loss, but I have heard that it works for some people. I looked at it as my last resort, I personally would only try it as a last resort if I were you. Good luck with whatever you choose
