I have suffered from depression for more than half my life. My sons(2 of them) are beginning to show severe signs of depression now too

I feel alcohol is a way to self medicate. It make you feel better in the short term but feel worse in the long term. The best defense is getting to a 12 step program and I guarantee you will meet people with same problem and are beating it. I also would look for a Dr to give you so pharmaceutical help if warranted. If you've already done that, know that alcohol will counte act the medication so it will seem its not working.

Alcohol covers the symptoms up….find a good psychiatrist to start you on a good regimen of medication.
