How Do You Handle Negative Thoughts You Believe To Be True But Can’t Move On Because Of Them?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Any advice on what to do about negative thoughts that are all you have and agree with, without replacing them with positive thoughts you don’t believe? What if your thoughts have a mean tone but you are friends with them or comfortable with them and don’t argue with them because it’s useless? But you can’t move on while hating yourself, but you do?
Thanks!

There was a time in my life when I suffered many negative thoughts, probably more than this healthy. I did the therapist thing and searching the Internet, and I came up with nothing that seem to work for me. This might sound totally superficial, but one day I thought what if I just faked it. Of course, that is what I tried for a while. Whenever the negative thoughts would come into my head, I would simply fake a good result in a good feeling. I have to admit that it did work. Not permanently, but for that moment. I don’t believe there’s any evidence in any studies that this is an appropriate or successful strategy. My sister at the time was also suffering. I also gave her the advice to fake it. She, too, experienced some success with it. it is no way takes away your illness with depression. I’m just saying on certain occasions, you might want to try to see if you have any success.

Look at negative thoughts as a bad habit. Keep trying to think positively even if you are not comfortable with it. Sooner our latter you will find one that is true. Another thing that you can try is gratitude lists. When I did my first gratitude list I did not think I had anything to be grateful for, but I did. It was small things, the weather was nice, I love hearing the birds singing and I was living in a nice home. It helps and like most things the more you practice it the easier it will get.

I like to write poetry, and read. And now I started diamond painting. However sometimes it still gets the best of me. Most times I can control myself other times I cannot.

There is science backing the idea of smiling even when you don't feel like it. Fake it til you make it isn't a bad idea. However, if you look for something good to focus on, even if it's a comedy on TV that makes you laugh, then you can start to feel a little better. Maybe you would stop hating yourself for a little while.

I’ve tried this and it gets me through things temporarily, but then my energy levels suffer even more later. But, yes, it does work for situations.
