How Does One Actually Learn To Love Themselves?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been depressed for more than a decade, and never really had the chance to give myself some of that "self love" that people talk about. Responsibilities, things going South in general, work (big factor), being there for everyone else. It's no so much a matter of time management, but how does one actually learn to love themselves?

I struggle with self-esteem issues, and I am pretty good at most things that I put my mind to - but I have just come to not enjoying anything I really do… read more

Something that has helped me with self esteem (and I'm still working on self love) is literally patting yourself on the back every time you complete a task - whether it be a responsibility, task at work, or something you have done for somebody else. For everything you don't do unsuccessfully, say out loud, "I'll do better next time." and give yourself credit for trying. For me I am a Christian and I had other Christians come around me, women who showed me who I am. And then aside from that I had or have a great therapist and other women who build me up. And actually we build each other up. But for many years I never had this

For me, it started with acknowledging just how rough life really is, and respect for just surviving the blows I was taking.

That led to a feeling of generosity to myself for my mistakes, and affection for the creature who was learning to navigate life despite an ugly upbringing.

Years have ripened my appreciation for the courage it takes to survive, in me and everyone else, because it is NOT easy. And love blooms naturally, I think, where sustained appreciation occurs.

All very best on your journey, Ragnarr! ❤️‍🔥

There are also multiple videos on YouTube for self-love, self-compassion. But I just started slow, giving myself some grace when I make mistakes, or don't perform to my own standards. If I find I am hearing too much criticism in my brain, it's usually not coming from my own mouth, but from my family's collective pie hole! That is not helpful to hear, so I challenge those, and internally give the message my special finger!
