Who Is Afraid To Ask For Help & How Do You Handle It?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

As for me that everyday, I feel as if I can handle things on my own & being afraid of asking for Help. It's like I don't know how to ask for help, it's just I'm 9 out of 10 scared to ask.

I am one who tries to handle it on my own until I reach the point I can't function. That's when I end up in the hospital. This time they connected me with a great psychiatrist who led me through all the options that were available to me. It was the first time in 30 years I followed all steps I needed to take to to improve my depression. It took a lot of work and about a year and a half, but it was well worth the time. I am starting to live my life again. I had to make some changes in my life that were very much affecting it. I you can't do it by yourself, find a friend or family member who will go with you. You will be surprised at how many people are willing to help if you open up about what you're going through. ❤️

I'm not. If I need help I go for it. Sometimes you need help. No harm in asking for it. What could they say "no". No big deal go to the next. If your talking about getting mental health. It's imperative you ask for help or you will be in a hole you won't be able to get out of. Try to get past it and ask for help. People are willing to help when asked.

I am not afraid, but rather ashamed. Long story. But, when things get so bad and you can't handle the pain, you reach out.
I found myself crying at a public library. I used 741741 to text for help. It's private and no one can hear your end of the conversation. I will definitely recommend it; I might even Need it again soon.

I try to remind myself that my gut feelings and thoughts are skewed and what would a healthier person do. If that doesn't work, then I actually say aloud (or write) exactly what my fear is - the whole shebang. They'll say no, think I'm weak, look like I'm a failure, be a burden, let people down, be embarrassed, the whole world will collapse... etc. Then I challenge the first part of that rabbit hole -- "they'll say no." What really would happen if they said no? Would they think any less of me? If I'm still stuck, I reverse it - what if someone asked me for help, would I think differently of them?

People generally think about themselves. There's a great phrase I keep in mind - "You wouldn't care as much about what people thought of you if you knew how infrequently they did." It's true. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. And just how you love helping others, others love helping you. Hard to accept, but true. GL!
