Nick Traina - Danielle Steele's Son Who Was Bi-polar And Committed Suicide.
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone read Danielle Steele's book A Bright Light? It is about her son, Nick who died in 1998 from suicide. He was bipolar. The book has really bothered me and would like to discuss it with someone who read it or perhaps remembers the media reports about his death. Thank you

@A MyDepressionTeam Member Thanks for your response. I'm glad that you read the book too. I agree with you the mental health system has changed a great deal in those 20 years. I've been "in it" much longer and I was also misdiagnosed. It seems like a crap shoot at times...who you get and what they say about you. But as you said it is slowly improving in some ways. One can only hope that it continues to improve and evolve and that others misdiagnosed will receive the correct diagnosis.

I have read all of Danielle Steele's books. I have also been in the mental health system over 20 years. Like her son, I was diagnosed as bipolar and I am not. I have taken over 20 meds and most were unhelpful. I believe things are getting better in the mental health system slowly. I see effort and doctors are more open to it. I have basically diagnosed myself with a qualified doctor and I have picked the combination of meds that help me. I feel like one of the lucky ones. I still feel like 20 years ago it is still a hit and miss when diagnosing mental illness and there is still so many unknowns. It will slowly improve as the attention is brought more and more to this dreaded illness.

I have read this book, & found it very insightful, it was heartbreaking to read of what he went through & what his family went through, but it gave me a better understanding into the disease,

Hey @A MyDepressionTeam Member I haven't read the book, avoid romance like the plague...but this book interests me, and I'm going to look into getting it. If i do, would definitely love to chat. I have similar questions and ideas i would like to discuss regarding holocaust survivors and the quality of mental health care most of them received (or more accurately, did NOT receive) so it's a topic I'm keen on...
