ECT - Anyone Had It Work In The Past, But Then Not Work Again?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

What I mean is that I have previously responded to several courses of ECT - Over a period of years. Then the last course I needed was unsuccessful - After about 14 sessions the Consultant basically told me that they couldn't do anything else to help me, and I might as well be discharged. I had been in hospital for a few months.

This was some years ago, and I am also trying to find out if there have really been any advances in the way it is administered etc, which might mean that it could be… read more

Hi David - ECT = Electro Convulsive Therapy - Just in case you haven't already Googled it :)
If you have then you probably know that it is usually only used for cases of Treatment-Resistant Depression - Your Consultant would be the best person to talk to about it really. If you have been classed as treatment resistant then from my own experience, ECT worked when nothing else did, I had been severely depressed for over a year and was hospitalised.
It took at least 4 or 5 treatments before I felt any difference at all - Then after that next treatment I had, as I was being taken back to the ward, I saw the sun shining down the corridor and just realised that I actually wanted to live again - It felt incredible, like that huge crushing weight had been lifted! ( When I say "treatments" I don't mean whole courses - Just each session)
They are all done under full anaesthetic, so painless, except for possibly a headache when you wake up - Yes, I did have some gaps in memory, but basically compared to the hell I was in, I have never really worried about it.

Definitely though the 1st thing I would do is tallk to your Consultant Psychiatrist, and see what they advise.
Whatever happens, I hope you stay strong and NeverSurrender to this disease!
All the best Jon

Thank you, I was not familiar with ECT. I'm glad things are looking better for you after your ECT. I will definitely talk to my Consultant Psychiatrist about this.

Can you tell me what ECT is? I'm not familiar.... The medicines I've tried seem to barely work or they work too good and make me feel really uncomfortable, almost numb inside.
