How Do You Know Whether To Trust Someone With Your Secret?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have a close family friend whom I want to trust to tell my life with Depression. He's also a doctor. I want it to be in confidence and not let it get back to my family. My family doesn't know about my latest psych hospitalization.
Note: This man is the Only one to stand up to my brother and tell him that he likes me and will continue to see me and my husband on a social bases.
I love him like a brother since I was in high school ( 1987).

You don't. I hope that you have developed a relationship and know this person well enough. I wish you well.

I listen to people. If someone talks to you about other people's stuff..more than likely they will talk to other people about your stuff.

You should know that as a doctor he's a mandated reporter, obligated to tell if he thinks you're a danger to self or other.

He sounds generous of spirit. You're lucky to have such a man in your life, Darcy. 💝

I don't want my family to know because they are opportunists. Their concern for me will be fake and it would be all about them. They're not for me in good times ( ex: wedding shower) and ai don't want them to see me like this because they'd love it!

That's a judgment call on your part, Darcy. Knowing the limits of confidentiality should help you make that decision. We won't take the consequences, so we can't make that decision for you. 💝
