Mirena IUD And Depression (for The Ladies)
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi People,

So I am curious, I have now had a IUD in for coming up 10 years (well technically this current one is my 2nd one) and I have been thinking I am going to need to have it removed next year - this causes me major fear as the first and second ones were both inserted under general anesthetic (I also had laparoscopies at the time), I have also never given birth and I am terrified about the pain of having it removed.

I had a copper IUD for 10 years and then a Mirena for 5. I have suffered from depression, bi-polar for all of that time. I have had my Mirena out for 6 years and it doesn't seem to have affected my mood any. It was not painful when I had it put in or removed. Just a small pinch. I would still talk to my doctor about my individual case.

You’re right. There is a lot written on side effects of Mirena... That said, you should prob consult with your doc and see if there are any combinations of meds that could cause your adverse symptoms, too. Have you considered speaking to your healthcare team about an alternative to IUDs in general or an alternative IUD to Mirena?

I think you should talk to a nurse or your doctor about your anxiety regarding this . Your fears may be unfounded and I am sure they will do what they can to make you comfortable.

@A MyDepressionTeam Member oh yes I will definitely discuss with GP/gynae but was just trying to find out some more info first, definitely worth considering for sure.
