How Do I Help My Boyfriend Who Suffers From Major Depression?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

My boyfriend suffers from major depression and anxiety. In mid may he altered his meds without dr consult. He went back on it when he realized how it affected him. But here it is July and hes been way distant, no affection towards me, quiet, withdrawn and barely talks to me anymore. He saw his dr about 2 weeks ago and adjusted his dosage. I'm not sure of what hes on currently
Hes definitely not the guy I know and it breaks my heart to see him like this. I haven't seen him in 2… read more

He sounds super stressed right now. Possibly your emotional needs are too much for him right now. Try allowing him the space he needs at the moment. Try not to feel threatened by his distance, pushing him for more than he can give may only drive him further away.

I agree, maybe step back a little and have him come to you. It sounds like his situation is too much for him to deal with right now.❤

I appreciate all your advice. I will be backing off a bit, but we agreed to talk at least once a week and even see each other. He said he has no interest in dating anyone else, he shouldn't even be dating me he said but hes fallen in love with me.
I know hes torn about us because we each have a child(teenagers) and his son lives with his mom 2 hrs from from where he lives. If he moves back to that town he gets 50/50 custody which means paying little to no child support. He doesn't want to move there because that place gives him anxiety because his ex wife lives there and she makes life hell. I cant move with him if he moves there either, because my daughter is in school here and doesn't want to relocate.
My boyfriend also wants to move out of state with his son which I've explained to him that will be really hard to get his ex on board with that. And our relationship would be over if he moved out of state. I could handle the 2 hrs away but not clear across country. Hes definitely not thinking clearly. It's like everything, in his mind right now, must be done this way or it will never happen.
I do think he finally sees how it affects me. All this time I've tried to keep a level head. And yesterday I broke down and cried. At 1st he walked away which hurt but he came back 10 minutes later and embraced me and kissed my forehead he didn't say anything he just hugged me. I know in time it can be better. I want him to think more rational. I want him to try meditation and mindfulness. But he refuses to even try once. 5 years ago when I was in my dark place meditation was what saved me. I'm pretty sure hes got adhd and cant sit still and that's why he wont try because he thinks he cant. I'm getting him to join a gym at least so he can feel better about himself.
