Family Making Depression And Stress?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I know my mental illness is from a chemical imbalance but my family causes almost all of my stress and they cause my depression to get worse. Im not being overdramatic. Ili was never this stressed out when i didnt have to deal with them. I love my nephew and i do all the family stuff because of him and i hate it. They are so disrespectful & unthankful. I have no one to take care of my cat if i have to go anywhere not that i have anywhere. The hospital didnt really help me at all the last time… read more

I was a caregiver for my mom for awhile and I didn't really get any help from my brother but he was a momma's (no offense to anyone). In her eyes he could do no wrong. I was the outcast. Her and I got in to a huge argument and I left. That was a few years ago. My brother waited to tell me 2 weeks after the funeral. He sent me a letter to tell me she had passed away. I was angry, hurt upset, depressed. I couldn't believe he had done that. So anyway I went to psycotherapist and he told me that even within we have to have our boundaries set in place. He explained that when you do that you have control over your life and how people treat you is up to you. If you don't then people will walk all over you and disrespect you. I was kinda mad at first but then I thought it and it makes total sense. Basically tell them you will not put up with it. You deserve respect just like everyone else, family is not.

Sometimes we have to detach from family members and love them from a distance. There’s no law that says you have to spend time with family members just because you’re related

The obligation we feel for our family can be very hard on your mental health.
The world paints a picture of the perfect family but I have never met one.
It is ok to go your own way and leave them to go theirs.
Step back and ask if you would be around these people if you weren't related.
If not, take leave. Go find your own tribe.
Keep in touch with family sure, but don't be tied down to them.

As hard as it may be to do, sometimes to separate yourself until you can become of sound mind or can feel better about you....your life may improve BIG TIME! It was one of the hardest things I had EVER done but I had to move away from my family; I knew in my heart, mind and soul that if I did not get away from my family that I would NEVER fully get better. Not saying I'm fully better by any means lol but the leaps and bounds I have made for myself in life have all been away from my family. I was able to see things differently and able to think and grow for myself....make my own decisions without the demented dysfunctional twist of my family's words or actions....just a thought hun hope it helps a bit <3 keep your head up and take care of you xoxo

With my family, we a very small knit....just five of our immediate family. Everyone knows that i have issues, but i know that they don't understand it, but I must say over the past couple of months, they have been trying, but for a while there, i thought everyone hated me and was plotting against me. I still go through the every time I have a complain or concern about something, I get the look like, "oh it's just her condition." That really makes me feel bad as if I don't "really" feel the way I do. My condition is just telling me that, when it's a legitimate concern.
