Does Anyone Else Object To The Term Mental Illness In Regards To Depression?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Ok nobody get mad at me for this, I'm not saying that it isn't and that it's not an illness. In my personal view for myself I see depression as an emotional sickness a sickness of the soul. I don't think that there is anything wrong with me mentally, and I don't like being described as someone with a mental illness. For me it makes perfect sense to want to end a painful existence, and I don't think that makes me crazy, I'm a perfectly sane and rational person. I know most people will disagree… read more

I have re- read your comment and may have answered inappropriately. I think Depression is called " mental illness" because it isn't a physical illness. So it may be just categorized that way. Depression is a disease tho, that affects the whole being. But having Depression doesn't mean that on is delusional or psychotic.

I think many of us, at some point or another have felt that life seemed rather pointless. Full of pain, but we still have hope, hope that we can lead content, if not happy lives. That is probably what keeps many going, hope for something better. Also a fear of causing terrible lasting pain for our loved ones. Which as Jimmy ashtekars post said, makes us by and large sympathetic and kind people who don't want to inflict on others the pain we ourselves feel. But in answer to your question, I think that are many of us who take it one day at a time, and continue to try to find something good in every day.

I guess i never really label it a mental illness. Im not ashamed of my depression like I was when I was younger. I'm very open about it and love talking to people that have questions. However is is difficult talking to people about how you feel when you are down. Bc you feel like/know they won't understand. Or they'll think I'm dumb for feeling this way.

I thought about suicide so much when I was in middle school. I felt like nobody cared anyways. Now that I know people DO CARE. Its the only thing keeping me here in this broken world! Still breaks my heart whenever I see Robin Williams on tv. Knowing that he was in so much pain, the amazing person he was.

@A MyDepressionTeam Member Yes! I totally have thoughts of that as well! That we're sent here to learn lessons!

The last time I was in the hospital we came up with the term "Mental Skillness" because it takes a lot of skills to deal with depression.
