Should I Disclose My Mental Illness At Work?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I have been depressed which has had negative impact on my performance at work. I am having a meeting with my boss regarding my poor performance . Should I disclose my mental illness to him bearing in mind that I work in high performance and competitive industry. I have also started treatment ( Prozac) 2 days ago .

That's a tricky one. Have you seen evidence that they would be supportive? Perhaps just saying, something general like you've haven't been feeling good lately...that way, they get the reason plus hope it can change. Everyone has less productive times. All the best to you!

I would tell you're boss, you.kinda have to, it'll bite you In the butt if you lie to him\her, wat if something happens & they don't know you're situation, it could get messy. Its a risk, but up yo you in the end. We will be here to support you watever. X I was on Prozac while working, & didn't need to hide it, that's before my mum killed herself. X

If he is very concerned about your work performance I would disclose it, but also don't use it as an excuse. I would state that you have depression and that you have also noticed that your performance has decreased and that you have taken action to get better by starting medication. You don't want to seem like you are using it as a crutch and you want to make your employer aware that you are working to get better!

My husband did disclose his mental illness at work. I mean he went to the ER for depression/bipolar because of how intense something job related made him feel. And then he went to an outpatient program. I find his mental illness is awful at his job. I think it should be disclosed if its affecting your performance and your health definitely. I know if I took a mental health day or so I'd still have some jobs I was so ashamed to be at because of myself.
