From my own experience, my life as well as coping skills working life social matters, was a train wreck! I was pretty much drunk the whole time before I was admitted into a few psych ward and properly diagnosed. Since then I've been on medication and seek counseling.
To best answer your question, sometimes medication works for some people, and sometimes it doesn't work for other people. It really depends on the diagnosis of a person and what the exact prognosis is.
My meds work for me to a point, then the meds lose it's flavor for what it's suppose to do. No matter the med or meds we take, we'll have to go it alone on other issues we have...like social networking or dealing with personal issues of ourselves. For you yes I would tell them you need help, cause if not it's going to come out anyway. And if you do nothing then it's only going to get unlivable to deal with.
