Qualifying For Long Term Disability For Depression
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi ..

I have been advised to apply for long term disability by my psychiatrist and counsellor, but the insurance company's initial response is to decline because I am in treatment for depression.

After 5 months I am still constantly fatigued and have poor memory and difficulty concentrating. This will make it almost impossible for me to return to full time work next month.

Do others have any recommendations or related experiences?

Thank you

Diana

I have been on disability for 20+ years due to mental illness. Back then, it was nowhere near as difficult to get approved as it is today. I'm not sure where your insurance company comes into the picture as far as deciding if you're eligible to file for disability and if you'd qualify or not. Social Security is a Federal program that is not mandated by any insurance company. From the little bit you mention here, I'd suggest you file for disability. This can be done online at ssa.gov. If you want any help or have any questions, I'm available to help. As recently as a year ago, I assisted folks with filing for disability.

Hi Diana I'm Sorry to hear your struggling with this, it can seem like a huge journey and the initial response from your insurance company can be off putting when your in a bad place.
I'm in the U.K. it works a little different however when I was advised as you to go on disability I had to appeal the case twice, it took mths and eventually after a home visit from a consultant was granted, disability, it does feel overwhelming at the time but trust in yourself and the advise of the professionals working with you best wishes

it is a long process to get it and be approved, and I know if a condition can be managed with medication or has the possibility of improvement they will be hesitant, but if you can get support and possibly work part-time. Your doctors may think it would be best but if you think it could be possible to return to work full-time at some point it may be good in between and if not working part-time you can always apply later. Keep working at it and good luck with treatment
