I Feel I Have Not Been Doing As Well Taking Lamotrigine Since It Became The Generic For Lamictal! Do Others Have Trouble With This Change?
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been hospitalized more often since I'm taking the lamotrigine rather than lamictal. I discovered the partical brand is the cheapest one my pharmacy, CVS, as least as of a couple years ago, sold. I looked it up. I've asked my providers if they would be willing to do the paperwork necessary to get me back on Lamictal but all of them have said no. What can I do? I know my moods better than anyone? I was told last time hospitalized it could be my body chemistry is changing now that I am… read more

I used to work for a pharmaceutical company. All the pharmacists swore generic was as good as the brand. Brands get patents for so many years (I think it's 10) then they have to release the patent. Other companies start making the same drug. However, although a pharmacist nor a doctor will admit it, I believe genetics are made with substandard ingredients. I think this because I actually had my vet ( of all people) tell me this. There's no way to REALLY know (at least in the US) because, well, they ARE the big pharmaceutical companies. I take limotrogin with no problems but I was never on lemectal. Most likely the brand will be much more expensive. I'm pretty sure that as the patient, you have the right to request brand. No generic. Doctors can't just tell you no about brand drugs. It's not like you're asking them for pain killers when you may not need them.

I know from my experience going from Glucophage--that's the name brand--right?( for diabetes) to all the generics, sometimes I would pee all month, other times not. I noticed at this family health clinic the color and code on the pills often changed, and told the doctor at the time it might be the ingredients the various drug companies use to add to the main active drug. All he did is shrug his shoulder and told me to drink more water. Well, I do NOT like what is going on with my mood swings since lamictal has gone to lamotrigine, but I am at the mercy of being on medicare disability and have to accept what my state's plan dictates. Thanks for the feedback!
