I'm meeting for the first time my niece who is 12 who I've noticed has some very dark posts about feelings (kids these days are too grown up) on FB interaction. Something simple like "I went through a really difficult time about 20 years ago and hurt myself. Thank goodness I found treatment and haven't done that in decades" It's honest, matter of fact, and in a subtle way lets them know they can talk to you if they ever feel rough.
I believe it's best to be honest, explain why at a level they can understand, and also let them know that was in your past. Big Hugs
