I've read that depression is caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals but how do they know? How can they measure levels of brain chemicals? My doctor didn't measure the amount of chemicals in my brain before giving me celexa. Are doctors guessing?
Did anyone here have the level of brain chemicals in their brain tested before being put on antidepressants?
I can't be certain but I think celexa helps me get to the point that I can work on my depression and do other treatments. I believe it's more than a placebo. I did do some research on it, including a site for people dealing with addictions to medication. The worst complaints I found about citalopram (generic celexa) is that it didn't help some people, it is an emotional roller coaster to start or change dosage and it's best to wean off slowly. Some of the others had huge withdrawals and were very addictive. I guess what convinces me that I have something physiological going on is that I can be depressed even when live is objectively good.
Anyway, you can google any of the medications and they explain how they work. They do research with mice so they know what the medications are doing in the brain. What they don't seem able to do is give a human a test to confirm what is happening in our brain when we are depressed. Actually as I write that I remember seeing brain scans of what parts of the brain are active during different emotional states. So there is some research behind it.
Hi AngieF, thanks for replying. This question is really beginning to bug me. Did your doctor give you any information about how your antidepressant wirks (if your taking one I mean).
Ah Vickie1 if only there was a test to check the chemicals in our brains, I'm sure that would make prescribing drugs a lot easier! Also talking therapy may not be a cure it is a very good release & can help with some of your anxiety problems.I have a counselor who I see once a week and its a great help.
Remember what you have achieved look in the mirror everyday and say I am beautiful. Eventually your brain will start believing it
